What We Talk About When We Talk About Music

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

Hello! We are writers of songs, despite all evidence to the contrary, and over four years, we’ve amassed quite a stable of songs we play live, songs we’ve abandoned, and songs we hope to play one day. Sometimes, we really like a song and then it disappears: “Cashing In” comes to mind, along with “Kinda Dark” and “Prizefighter.” Sometimes, they never make it out of practice: “Claustrophobe,” for example, and the long-awaited “Birthday Cake.” Hell, there are songs we would totally play, but we just don’t have the fucking time anymore: “Don’t Wait Up,” which made a brief reappearance at the Auction House last year, “Hide & Seek,” which is everyone’s favorite but mine, and “Silver Lining,” although Sam would rather not.

Here we are, four years old (this many!), and we really kind of have more songs than we know what to do with. The solution? More fucking songs! It’s been a hell of a lull for me and Sam, but, like prizefighters, we’ve come out swinging. Let’s talk about what we’ve got right now, and see whether we still have them months and years down the road.

Of all of the songs we’re working on right now, I think—probably arrogantly—that “The Slightest” is probably the best hit-single material. It’s simple, it has some good hooks, and we’ve done some preliminary futzing around with the structure that’s yielded some cool results. Still to come: harmonies, set leads, and probably eight or nine lyrical revisions. I’m already toying around with calling it “Mostly Harmless” instead, since it’s such a fitting title and since Douglas Adams is (was) awesome.

What we’re so far calling “Careless,” though, is catchy as hell. It’s simpler than “The Slighest” and has nice harmonies throughout, and I think it might be the most fun to play of all the new songs. We’ve got clapping in there, too, which I’ve been pushing for for years. Ultimately, Sam slid it into a song before I could. Bastard.

Then there’s “Revolver,” which might be too simple. Every song has one thing that makes it worth playing or listening to, something that might not come out until it’s been worked on for months. I felt that way about “Hide & Seek” until Red Orange Morning’s Ryan Hampton came up with a pretty great bassline. “Sweet Business” is a great song, but the reason to listen to it, I think we’ve all agreed, is the chorus, which wasn’t there from the get-go. “The Arrest” really wasn’t anything but a catchy verse until Sam pulled out a chorus and I threw some lyrics on top. That’s a really long way of saying that I don’t think “Revolver” has found that reason to be yet.

There are other songs—about three—that we’ve got on our plates, but those first three are the ones we’re really excited about, which means they’re the most likely to hear at the next Action Set show—whenever that is.

Memory Lane

Friday, December 19th, 2008

Take a trip down memory lane with Your Action Set this holiday season. We’ve posted our demos of ‘The Arrest’ and ‘Give Up’ on our MySpace, which were recorded a long time ago by our friend Derek. Derek is a good dude who is a bit of a metalhead and told us he had never recorded a band like ours before (which I think mostly means he hadn’t recorded an acoustic guitar). Anyway, we were very happy with the demos and thought they were a good indication of our progress to that point.

Fast forward to a week ago and we are working on a new song Pat brought called ‘Always.’ We expect to play it at Arlene’s Grocery on the 27th so if you’re in the city and able to make it out you’ll get to hear a new jam. If you can’t make it, you can find a lo-fi recording of our practice on this very myspace account.

Also, and we’re serious this time, we’re going to record… something, somewhere, soon. Once we have more details we’ll post them here.

Have a great Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa/Ramadan/secular Xmas! Love to everybody, and a safe, happy, and healthy New Year.

Hope to see you on the 27th.

New Friends, New Fixtures

Thursday, December 6th, 2007

It’s that time again. And by “that time,” we of course mean “we booked another slew of shows.” As an experiment, we booked them in a spaced-out fashion instead of the short, two-week onslaughts of recently and early Fall. We’ll see how that goes.

Biggest news is that we’re playing The Khyber again on January 4th. Following that, we have shows at Piano’s, Pete’s Candy Store, Union Hall, and The Underscore, all in New York.

We’re still working on the new songs, which are coming along nicely, as well as incubating other newness that has yet to reach the practice space. Sometimes, Sam and Pat keep their own solitary counsel on songwriting for a little while.

Shows & Songs

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

Your Action Set has a few upcoming shows! First is November 20th at the Khyber in Philly. We’ll be playing with The Blakes and The Shots, both of which are definitely bands with “the” in their names. Playing the Khyber is a big deal for us, being from the area and having seen as many shows there as we have, collectively, so if you have to pick one show to go to in November, we’d point you towards that one.

Second is November 27th at The Delancey in Manhattan. We’ll be playing with Baby Teardrops, and it’s $6 to get in and is 21+. Then we’re playing Kenny’s Castaways on Bleecker. Again, it’s 21+, $5 at the door, and we’ll be playing with Syndey Wayser, whom we have yet to meet. Kenny’s is a classic Village venue, and it should be a great show.

Besides that, we’ve been working on some new material to slip into our sets at these upcoming shows. The songs are (tentatively) titled “Sweet Business,” “Say The Word,” and “Claustrophobe,” and we’re pretty happy with the way things are shaping up. There’s a definite possibility of us going back into the studio in the next six months to record a full-length album. Despite already having around forty songs kicking around the Action Set canon, Sam and Pat are continuing to write new songs, so what will ultimately end up on the album is a question that won’t be answered for a good long while yet. We’ll keep you posted.

Summer Tour Addendum

Monday, August 6th, 2007

We’ve just finished our little summer mini-tour, and we just wanted to thank everyone who made it out to one or more of the shows. We had a great–although exhausting–time doing four shows in six days at four amazing venues. Thanks also to Red Orange Morning, Sure Juror, Network Of Halos, and the bassist from 16 Frames for lending me and Sam picks.

Next up for your Action Set? Possibly an LP. Stay tuned.
