“Silver Lining”

This is, without exception or qualification, the oldest Action Set song there is. Having said that, I will immediately qualify that with the fact that it’s not the oldest song Action Set plays; it’s just the oldest “Action Set” song we play. “Give Up,” for example, and “Floating Fortress,” “London Bridges,” and “Don’t Wait Up” are all older songs that pre-date Action Set’s historic founding. “Give Up” and “London Bridges” were both songs Sam’s old band The Arrest (sorry, copyright infringement; whatevz), “Floating Fortress” was something I’d been kicking around for a year or so, and “Don’t Wait Up” was something from my old band, The Recommended Dosage (it didn’t melt faces off back then). “Silver Lining”–along with “Sugarteeth”–was one of the first things Sam and I worked on as a fledgling band (with no drummer at the time). For that matter, so was “Hide & Seek.” The song has remained pretty much the same since that first time, with minor tweaks and affectations being added or removed, as well as a little lyrical expansion. And I quote:

if you say so, we can breathe
inside this moment, hold it forever
you say your train’s gonna come
you say you’ve gotta leave
you say you need more room to breathe
and if you say so, that’s what I believe

if you look close, you can find
among this dark clouds, a silver lining
and if you say so, you don’t have to go
and if you say so, you don’t have to go

you don’t have to go
